More About the Course

What is the course composed of?
The course includes 13 videos and 17 PDF files—worksheets, cheat sheets, resource lists, and exercises.

What level of writer is this course geared toward?
Writers at a wide range of skill levels will benefit from this course. The material is presented in a simple, organized form so that writers who have never before edited their own work will be guided through the process. But it contains enough in-depth information that the most experienced writers are sure to learn something new.

What type of prose should this course be used to edit?

The course is designed specifically for fiction prose—short stories, novellas, and novels. The second half of the course would be useful for flash fiction. While I created the course with fiction in mind, most of the elements and skills are transferrable to other types of prose storytelling, including memoir and creative nonfiction.

How long will the course take to complete?
The time required to complete the course depends on your manuscript's length, the amount of work it requires, and the amount of time you are able to invest. This is a self-guided course. You can work through the materials at your own pace.

Why are you qualified to teach this course?
I am a professional editor. I have worked with a range of creative writing, in all genres and lengths. I have a B.A. in English, and my undergraduate work included intense criticism of both classic and modern literature, which provided a strong foundation for developmental editing. Many of the skills I learned while applying deconstruction and reader response criticism, especially, have been invaluable during editing. I also studied Creative Writing, including a rigorous copy editing class. Those studies created a strong foundation for my editing skills. I'm also a writer myself, with over forty published pieces in literary magazines, journals, and anthologies.

What happens after the course?
Other than submitting/querying your newly editing manuscript, you mean? You'll be invited to join the private Facebook group for students of the course, where you can connect with other writers currently in the editing process and ask questions. If I add material to the course in the future, you will be emailed copies of the new material.

How can I pay?
The Buy Now button above will take you to a secure checkout, where you can pay by PayPal, credit or debit card, or e-check.

How do I receive the course?
After checking out, you will be emailed a link to the course page within 24 hours. The worksheets are embedded for online viewing or download. The videos are embedded from YouTube. You are welcome to download the videos for offline viewing using a third-party application. Or you may contact me, and I will gladly send links to download the files.

What’s stopping me from sharing the course?
Nothing, technically. But I've had enough experience with the writing community to trust that students of the course will respect the hours, effort, and love I have invested in Edit Like A Pro by keeping the links and files to themselves.

Feel free to contact me with further questions about the course.
